About GeneEd

GeneEd, Inc. and UCSF's HIV InSite introduce free Anti-HIV Therapy e-Learning seminar

Internet users all over the world - especially HIV patients, their families and friends, doctors and healthcare workers- now have access to a compelling, multimedia seminar on how the deadly virus develops in the body and what treatments are available to stop it from spreading.

San Francisco, CA, March 29, 2001— GeneEd, Inc. announced today that it is partnering with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to distribute GeneEd's new Anti-HIV Therapy e-Learning seminar at no cost to Internet users worldwide.

This seminar is available on the Internet from GeneEd (www.GeneEd.com) and UCSF's HIV InSite (hivinsite.ucsf.edu). Both GeneEd and HIV InSite will promote and distribute the seminar, especially to Third World countries, where the incidence of AIDS has been rising dramatically. The seminar will also be available on CD-ROM.

"For a great many people, lack of HIV education can mean the difference between life and death," said Dr. Sunil Maulik, GeneEd's CEO. "With the contributions of Dr. Paul Volberding and his team at HIV InSite, this compelling, multimedia seminar gives HIV patients, their families and friends, doctors and healthcare workers an understanding of how the virus works in the body, what treatments are currently available, and the scientific rationale for adhering to the therapeutic regimens."

"This seminar is part of GeneEd's mission to help improve global health. One of our company's core values is to provide 5% of our profits, our time, and our courseware to society. If this online seminar can help save even a single life, the effort involved in its creation will have been worthwhile," continued Dr. Maulik.

"We are pleased to be integrating the GeneEd seminar into the extensive collection of HIV/AIDS information already available at HIV InSite," said Paul Volberding, MD, Director of HIV InSite, chief of the medical service at San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and vice chair of the UCSF Department of Medicine. "This animated audiovisual presentation will give physicians, medical students and the educated lay public a broad overview of the life cycle of HIV, how the virus causes AIDS, and how the disease can be treated. It provides a good background to HIV InSite's comprehensive, expert-level coverage of HIV/AIDS knowledge."

GeneEd's Anti-HIV Therapy seminar covers the following topics:

  • The structural organization of HIV
  • How HIV interacts with the immune system
  • The clinical stages from infection to AIDS
  • The available drugs and how they work
  • Drug regimens and the importance of patient compliance

"We developed this seminar in a way that takes the most current information available on HIV, AIDS and its treatment, and applied our industry-leading, e-Learning methodology," said Dr. Maulik. "The result is an online seminar that informs and educates in a way that ensures maximum retention by the student."

GeneEd's instructional design team developed this course with Dr. Blessila Castro, who previously carried out HIV research in Dr. Jay Levy's lab at the UCSF AIDS Research Institute. Dr. Levy is a world-renown expert on AIDS and HIV research.
