Content Providers (SCPs). Consisting of authorities and domain experts
in every area for which GeneEd provides education, these professionals
contribute high quality, cutting-edge content to GeneEd’s online
courses, participate in the creation and storyboarding process, and
then assess completed courses before their release, validating the accuracy
of every detail. SCPs also cross-check each others' courses and provide
access to their colleagues and laboratories for testing and certification
of new courses. GeneEd's team of SCPs boasts the following experts.
Vinod Achan, MA, MRCP –
Cardiovascular Research Fellow, Stanford University. Dr. Achan is a physician,
an expert in molecular physiology, and the author of a textbook on the
subject published by Blackwell Scientific. He provided content for GeneEd’s
course in Cardiovascular Genomics.
Rhonda Bohn, MPH, DSc – Consultant Epidemiologist,
Division of Pharmacoepidemiology, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard
Medical School. Dr. Bohn, a specialist in pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics,
provides expertise on pharmaceutical and biotechnology corporation sales
force training.
Stacey Bolk, PhD – Scientist, Lander Laboratory,
Whitehead/MIT Genome Center. Dr. Bolk, a specialist in human genetics
and an expert in the field of SNPs and polymorphisms, provided content
for GeneEd's advanced course, "SNPs: Identification and Uses."
Cathleen Brdlik, PhD– Postdoctoral Fellow, Department
of Therapeutic Radiology, Yale Medical School. Dr. Brdlik’s most
recent degree is a Ph.D. in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology
from Yale University.
Barry Bunin, PhD – Founder, Libraria, Inc; author
of Combinatorial Chemistry. Dr. Bunin, a combinatorial chemistry expert
and pioneer in solid-phase combinatorial synthesis, provided content
for GeneEd’s course in advanced combinatorial chemistry.
Annie Chan, MD – Resident in Ophthalmology,
Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Chan, who earned her medical
degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, provided content for
the GeneEd course on ophthalmology.
Michelle Cargill, PhD – Scientist, Lander Laboratory,
Whitehead/MIT Genome Center. Dr. Cargill has a background in human genetics,
with special expertise in SNPs and polymorphisms. She provided content
for GeneEd's advanced course, "SNPs: Identification and Uses."
Peter Vincente Chin-Hong, MD –Fellow in Infectious
Diseases at the University of California, San Francisco, and Diplomate
of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Chin-Hong is an expert
on AIDS and other viral infections who has directed international research
in Western Samoa and Australia. He created GeneEd’s course on
acid-related digestive disorders.
Kristina Cobb, MS, PhD – Clinical Assistant
Professor, Department of Health Research and Policy, Stanford University.
Dr. Cobb, who holds a master degree in statistics and a doctorate in
epidemiology, provided content for the GeneEd biostatistics course.
Karen J. Friday, MD – Clinical Professor, Stanford
University School of Medicine; Staff Physician, PAVAHCS. Dr. Friday,
a former director of clinical departments at Roche Bioscience and Syntex
Research in Scotland, has special competency in pacing and defibrillators.
Having published numerous research articles and book chapters on cardiovascular
medicine, she received a Department of Medicine Teaching Award in Cardiology
(2003) from Stanford. Dr. Friday created the GeneEd course on atrial
fibrillation.
Nat Goodman, PhD – Independent bioinformatics
consultant and former faculty member at Harvard University and Boston
University. Dr. Goodman was a founding member and associate director
of the Whitehead/MIT Center for Genome Research, where he supervised
the informatics core. He also led a bioinformatics research group at
the Jackson Laboratory and a bioinformatics marketing team at Compaq
Computer Corporation. Dr. Goodman provided content for GeneEd's microarray
informatics course.
Gita Rani Gupta, MD – Resident in Internal Medicine,
University of Oslo. Dr. Gupta earned her medical degree from the University
of Oslo in Norway. Formerly focused on psychiatry and neuroscience,
she is currently specializing in ENT. Dr. Gupta provided content for
GeneEd’s course on bipolar disorder.
Geeta Kadambi, PhD – Senior Scientist, Molecular
Dynamics Corp. Formerly a scientist at Hyseq, Inc., Dr. Kadambi also
conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University. An expert in
microarrays and bioinformatics, she provided content for GeneEd’s
advanced courses on those topics.
Ellen Kuwana, MS – Freelance medical writer
and editor. Ms. Kuwana possesses a degree in biochemistry with an emphasis
on neuroscience. For eight years, she was a staff writer for the University
of Washington’s educational Web site, “Neuroscience for
Kids.”
Joseph C. Liao, MD – Assistant Professor of
Urology, Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Liao provided content
for GeneEd’s overactive bladder course.
Y. Joyce Liao, MD, PhD – Instructor, Department
of Neurology and Neurosciences, Stanford University Medical Center.
Dr. Liao, who received her degrees from the University of California
at San Francisco, has clinical expertise in neurodegenerative diseases,
movement disorders, stroke, epilepsy, and migraine. She was the recipient
of the 2004 S. Weir Mitchell Award for basic research in neuroscience,
conferred by the American Academy of Neurology. She provided content
for GeneEd’s courses on stroke and dementia/Alzheimer’s
disease.
Dinesh Patel, PhD – Vice President of Research
and co-founder, Versicor Corp. Dr. Patel previously served as a medicinal
chemist at Bristol-Myers Squibb and as Senior Scientist and head of
a combinatorial chemistry group at Affymax Research Institute. Dr. Patel,
an expert in the field of synthetic medicinal chemistry, provided content
for GeneEd’s advanced combinatorial chemistry course.
Shani Peretz, MS, PhD – Lead Biology Teacher,
Peddie School. Dr. Peretz earned a Ph.D. in genetics from Yale University.
In addition to research expertise in genomic imprinting, medical genetics,
and genetic control of tumor progression, she has many years of experience
teaching science and technology to broad audiences. Dr. Peretz provided
content for GeneEd’s breast cancer patient education course.
Raji Pillai, PhD – Senior Scientist, Affymetrix
Corp. A graduate of the Brown Lab at Stanford University, Dr. Pillai
is an expert in the field of microarrays and biochips. He provided content
for GeneEd's advanced course on microarrays.
Jack Pollard, PhD – Principal Investigator of
Bioinformatics and head of the microarray consulting practice, 3rd Millennium,
Inc. Dr. Pollard earned his doctorate from Harvard University and has
written numerous research articles and patents on biochemistry and informatics.
He provided content for GeneEd's microarray informatics course.
Sonja Potrebic, MD, PhD – Assistant Adjunct
Professor, Department of Neurology, University of California at San
Francisco. A graduate of Harvard Medical School and a Diplomate of the
American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Potrebic has extensive
experience in pain management and anesthesiology. She provided content
for GeneEd’s courses on neuropathic and nociceptive pain.
Sanjiv Shah, MD – Cardiology Fellow, Department
of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Shah, a third-year
fellow focusing on acquired and genetic risk factors for ventricular-arterial
stiffness, provided content for the GeneEd course on chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease.
Revati Shreeniwas, MD, FCCP – Clinical Development
Specialist. Dr. Shreeniwas has served as associate clinical professor
of medicine at Stanford and as assistant professor of clinical medicine
at Columbia University. A medical practitioner and clinical research
expert, she has provided medical and pulmonary consultative services
for over ten years. Dr. Shreeniwas contributed to GeneEd’s courses
on pulmonary medicine.
Sujan Shresta, PhD – Postdoctoral Fellow, University
of California at Berkeley. Dr. Shresta earned a bachelor of arts in
biology from Smith College and a doctorate in immunology from Washington
University. With special expertise in cellular immunology, specifically
T cell activation and cytotoxic lymphocyte-induced apoptosis, she provided
content for GeneEd’s courses on bacteria and antibiotic therapy.
Jennifer Watson, PhD – Postdoctoral Fellow in
Behavioral Medicine, Stanford Hospital. Dr. Watson provided content
for GeneEd’s course on schizophrenia.
Jay Wohlgemuth, MD – Sr. Fellow, Stanford Medical
School; Principal Scientist, BioCardia Corp. Dr. Wohlgemuth, an expert
in cardiovascular genomics, provided content for GeneEd's advanced course
on microarrays.
Chris Zoumalan, MD – Chief Resident, Stanford
University, Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Zoumalan, who will soon
begin fellowship training in oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery,
has written numerous publications and book chapters on ophthalmology
and neuroimaging. He provided content for GeneEd’s diabetic retinopathy
course.
